George Fox University in Founded by Friends: a Collection of Essays on the Quaker Colleges in America

Excerpt: George Fox University is owned by Northwest Yearly Meeting, which appoints all its trustees. Four-sevenths of these must be Friends, and this relationship keeps the institution close to its parent religious body. This being the case, a high degree of interaction exists between Northwest Yearly Meeting and the university, and this relationship is felt to be mutually beneficial. While the number of Friends students in the traditional undergraduate program has remained between 74 and 145 over the past three decades or more (making up between 4 and 15 percent of the traditional undergraduate population), aspects of Quaker identity are nonetheless present. The Center for Peace Learning (founded in 1985 by Lon Fendall at the recommendation of Lee Nash) was sparked by Mark 0. Hatfield\u27s question about what we are doing to resolve the problems of war. It was expanded into the Center for Peace and Justice in 2003, and its annual John Woolman Peacemaking Forum maintains a focus on the instructions of Jesus to be effective peacemakers in the world. Quaker Heritage Week (founded by Arthur Roberts and the Department of Religious Studies in 1975) endeavors to heighten the visibility of a particular aspect of our Friendly heritage in ways serviceable to all members of the community, not just Friends, and a variety of other campuswide emphases on Quaker concerns also address the furthering of the institution\u27s mission. Other special-interest weeks, including Spiritual Life, Multicultural, Missions, and Alcohol Awareness, as well as the Spring Theological Conference, provide special foci on particular concerns

The Relationship of Gender, Spirituality, and Willingness to Seek Mental Health Treatment Among Students at a Faith-Based Institution

College is a demanding time in a student’s life that can require willingness to seek help in times of significant distress. The factors that can influence this decision are numerous and complex. This study examined the relationship between willingness to seek mental health treatment, gender, and level of religiosity and spirituality in students that are enrolled in a single faith-based institution. Results suggest that female students were more willing to seek help from a mental health professional than males, and students who endorsed high levels of religiosity and spirituality were more inclined to seek help from a religiously affiliated advisor than those who endorsed low levels of religiosity and spirituality

Attachment, Forgiveness, and Generativity in Midlife

Current literature suggests secure attachment and forgiveness are positively correlated. However, to date, the relationship of adult attachment, forgiveness, and generativity has not been explored. In this current study, middle-aged adults, ages 45-80 from the George Fox University Alumni were surveyed to explore attachment (anxious and avoidant), generativity, and forgiveness. Since generativity is a prosocial trait, synonymous with altruism, suggesting one’s selfless service and concern for the well-being for others, it is predicted that generativity will have a positive relationship with forgiveness, and secure attachment. Further, multiple regression statistics were used to explore which of the independent variables (anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, and generativity) has the greatest effect on the dependent variable of trait forgiveness. Results indicated that there was a medium positive relationship between forgiveness and secure attachment, between generativity and secure attachment, and between forgiveness and generativity. Multiple regression found that each of the independent variables (anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, and generativity) were significant predictors of forgiveness with anxious attachment being the strongest predictor of forgiveness
